Erico Nagai - A Mediator between Cultures
Exhibition Dates:
13 June - 26 July 2008
Exhibition Opening:
Thursday 12 June 2008, 18:30
Deutsche Version
"Building Bridges" is the theme of the 850th Anniversary of the City of Munich.
Galerie Handwerk is tapping into the symbolic meaning of this theme with an exhibition where the Munich-based goldsmith Erico Nagai takes centre stage in a dialogue that incorporates both European and Japanese design approaches. The contributions to this exhibition were selected in close collaboration with Erico Nagai and were for the most part proposed by her.
The main focus of the exhibition is on Erico Nagai's goldsmith work. This is complemented by works in gold and in silver from Japan and Europe. Ceramic, enamel, paper and textiles by famous Japanese masters will also be exhibited. Meanwhile, part of the exhibition will be dedicated to work by students from the workshop for goldsmiths at the Munich Design Academy.
Erico Nagai was born in Tokyo and came to Munich in 1968 to study at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts. It was here that she met the eminent gold and silversmith Franz Rickert, whose class she joined in 1970. Rickerts was followed in 1972 by Hermann Jünger, who accompanied Erico Nagai through her further studies. Erico Nagai has received a great number of prizes. She has been awarded a scholarship by the city of Munich, the Bavarian State Prize at the Munich International Skilled Trades Fair and has twice been awarded the Herbert Hofmann prize.
In 2005, Erico Nagai was awarded the Munich Design Prize. She has a very prominent position in the world of international jewellery and, in addition to her many exhibitions, has taught at the International Summer Academy in Salzburg. Since 1994, she has been one of the most distinguished lecturers at the Academy for Design at the Munich and Upper Bavarian Chamber of Skilled Trade, where she designs and holds workshops for goldsmiths. Her talent for teaching, her artistic creativity and her technical assuredness and perfection provide her students with inspiration and challenge in equal measure.
The exhibition at the Galerie Handwerk shows Erico Nagai in various roles: as a goldsmith, as a teacher and as a mediator between cultures. Her role has often been that of bringing Japanese culture and European culture closer to one another. At many exhibitions dedicated to Japanese art and skilled trades, she has been involved in an advisory capacity, accompanying projects, supporting exchanges between the two cultures, building relationships and creating understanding for art and skilled trades from both cultures.
In Munich, Japanese lifestyle and Japanese culture are admired. The great level of interest in Japanese aesthetics is also a sign that bridges have been built here. These bridges have been built by people, not least by Erico Nagai.
